FAQ - School Bookings

Picture
Q. How many participants can you take in a session?
A. The best school group size is 12-24, but can do up to 36 in one session. School session prices are capped at 28. If you have more than 28 in a session it costs $10 extra per participant.
In most cases, I charge by the session, rather than the number of participants.
The average session size is about 24 students. Having said that, I am flexible! Tell me what you need and I can make it work.

Q. How many sessions can you run in a day?
A. Usually, I run 3 sessions in a day, either side of a school's usual recess and lunch breaks, but some schools squeeze in four or even five in a day. It can be the same class for every session, but usually schools like to involve as many kids as possible. Occasionally, I will do a single session in a day, (especially in high schools) but you get better value for money if you can book me for at least two sessions.
A lot of schools have booked me for two consecutive days and many have hired me for a whole week, teaching a different class or age-group each day.
I am flexible and can easily adapt to your needs.

Q. What ages to you cater for in schools?
A. I have run school sessions from Kinder up to Year 12. Everyone seems to respond well to Robot Man, no matter what their age! I have developed a number of activities that can be adapted to suit any age. The majority of schools that hire me tend to be from Grade 3 to Year 8. I have actually been a full-time real world classroom teacher from Grade 1 up to Year 12, so I really can pitch to any age.

Q.What is the best amount of time for each session
A.You can decide any length for your classes based on these recommendations, (below). For example a Grade 1 class could do a session from 45 to 90 minutes; (most Grade Ones do about 75 minutes)

Q. What sort of robots do you have?
A. I have a class set of Dash, Cubelets, Lego EV3 and Lego Spike Prime. In 2024 I bought a class set of Sphero Indi and also Tale-Bot Pros. My most recent purchase was a class set of Coding Express trains! So I have 7 different robots I can use. I usually use one set each session. Sometimes two sets in a session.

To accompany my robots I have made several resources such as board games, mazes, puzzles, race tracks, train tack templates, a soccer field, sumo wrestling arenas, coloured planks for battling and more! All were created to inspire engagement and encourage students to be challenged in a fun way!

Q. What time of day will you start?
A. Often I arrive at schools about an hour before starting with the students. So I usually get asked to arrive between 8.00 and 9.00a.m.
If sessions started at 9:10a.m., for example, I would aim to be there just after 8:10a.m.

Q. What does the school host need to provide?
A. Just an indoor space. At schools, I have run workshops in classrooms, multipurpose rooms, music rooms, gymnasiums and libraries. My activities tend to run better by utilising floor space rather than desks. A normal classroom is ok. But usually the bigger the space, the better! (Especially for older students)
Carpet or no carpet is fine.

It is important that I have the same space all day, because I bring a lot of equipment!

If you have an available TV or projector then that’s great, but I can set up my own if needed. I also have a good selection of cables and adapters, so I usually have little difficulty connecting to your TV, if available.  Most schools provide me with a couple of tables out front for my robots and other equipment.

I do not need computers or internet access. Any coding the students do will be on iPads that I provide. All robots are battery operated students will not be involved in charging my robots.

Q. Where are you based?
A. I live in Hobart but I travel all over Tassie. I used to visit some Victorian schools, but I don't have plans to do that again. I have been to more than 130 different Tassie schools since I started my Robot Man business back in 2018.

Q. How much does it cost?
A. It depends on the number of sessions and your location
Number of sessions: To a certain degree, the more sessions you book, the cheaper each session is. Schools get better value if they book three or more sessions. But even a single class or a double session is good value compared to an excursion! (Most of my single sessions are high school classes or with PCYC, but any school can book a single or double session if they are keen)

Location: I have divided Tassie into 4 zones. Each Zone has a different travelling expense. But if you book 6 sessions or more, (on consecutive days) there are no travelling expenses, regardless of your location in Tasmania. Travel expenses really only covers fuel costs, so I think they are very generous and reasonable. I only add $100-$300 for travel, depending on location.

I have made a calculator that easily estimates a quote based on your location and number of desired sessions, HERE

Q. How and when do I pay?

A. I will invoice your school on, or after, the day that I visit. I send you the invoice, then you send it to your School's Business Manager.

No deposit needed, beforehand. I ask to be paid within 30 days of my visit.

Invoice always matches quote. No Surprises.

Q. Do you do Teaching Staff Professional Learning?
A. Yes. There are two types of PL available.
1. If a teacher attends a workshop with the students I offer a PL certificate for that teacher, upon request at no extra cost.

2. I have often been invited to attend a staff meeting to run a PL. I have a motivating visual presentation, followed by some hands-on robotics. Suits the novice and expert, alike. You can decide if you want demonstration or participation... or both! They usually run from 60-90 minutes. See more here.
