Dancing   Robot

Project Name: Dancing Robot
Controlled by: Programming
Programming Difficulty: Medium-hard
Construction Difficulty: Medium
General Comment. This is a fun challenge that always creates a few laughs!

Rules FOR STUDENTS

You must use:
-1 NXT or EV brick
-At least 2 wheels
-3 motors
A program such as Audacity or Garage Band to trim a song to one minute.

You must:
Build a robot that can appear to dance to a song. You need to edit the music so it goes for exactly one minute. Give your music to the teacher as an Mp3, so we can have a "dance-off".
When the song finishes, the robot should stop dancing!

Tips For students

Tip: You can decorate their robots so they look like dancers
Tip: if you can work out the exact time between beats and get your robot to move to the beat, it will look more effective.

SAMPLE PROGRAMMING (older icon-based coding)

The program will be different for every robot, depending on the music. Good robots will move in time with the music. Short, sharp movements are often better than long boring movements. Below is a sample of what the very start of your dance could look like. Notice a movement every 0.2 seconds! The ultra sonic sensor might just be there to look cool (like eyes).

In this example, the hub can display a smiling face! Two movement motors make the robot move back and forth and spin. The single motor makes arms spin. When "play" is pressed, all three stacks run at once.

TEACHER INFO

Collect and label all music files as they are ready, even with the kit numbers in the file name. Or an easier option is everyone dances to the same song! Maybe at the same time!
Find a mirror ball and even a Dance Floor to inspire the class!

Grading option: It's pretty hard to judge dancing robots. You could get the class to vote or
if you want a more calculated score for each robot, make a copy of either of the top two Google Sheets
HERE

You could get the class to vote, using a voting slip, I made, here:

File Size: 20 kb

An additional idea is to get the robots to dance in groups. If they share a program, then they will look synchronised!
